Freshly
opened in the summer of 2014, Dharamsaal is one of the new homes of
the Teachings of Yogi Bhajan in Tallinn, founded and directed by
Sukhdev Kaur. Dharamsaal means the “place or Realm of Dharma”. It
is described by Guru Nanak in the Japji Sahib (pauree 34) as the
earth or the first blue ether, where we come to reflect on our karmas
and learn to be graceful and compassionate in the company of others.
Inspired
by the words of the Siri Singh Sahib Yogi Bhajan, Dharamsaal’s
vision is to “Build a home where the honesty, tranquility, peace,
service and giving can dwell, where tolerance, brightness and spirit
can shine and show people that God lives.” (Yogi Bhajan, July
21, 1988).
Dharamsaal
is located in a cozy 3-floor wooden building in the very heart of
Tallinn, Liivalaia street nr 11, the “Wall Street” of
Tallinn. The Training Center is in the top floor, under
the roof. The main yoga space is approx 70 m2 (50 m2 of usable space)
with dark wooden floor and very cozy environment. We also have a full
kitchen and a guest room with a private entrance, which hosts
teachers and also other guests through our Airbnb service.
MISSION:
Dharma/
Individual:
To be a
home of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan and other related
spiritual disciplines, which provides individuals a personal
experience of their own divinity and royalty, opening up for
possibilities and new beginnings in their personal spiritual
development. We offer weekly sadhanas, regular Kundalini yoga classes
mornings and evenings, beginner’s courses and specialized classes.
Sangat /
Group consciousness:
We aim to
provide a shelter for the soul, a home to the spirit and a cozy place
where people from all walks of life are welcome to share their own
experiences as human and to open up in group consciousness.
Dharamsaal’s one of the main directions is Humanology, the art and
science of being and becoming fully human. Under this light, we are
happy to inspire humans, both women and men through a Conscious
Pregnancy, Conscious Parenting and Playful Parenting workshops, Baby
and mother yoga, Children’s yoga, women’s circles, Conscious
Pregnancy yoga and Yoga doula teacher trainings and one-on-one
consultations and healings.
More
specifically, we have created the “mother’s mornings”, where
one morning a week welcome women and children of all ages to be
together and creatively share in a free environment and open program
in the presence of other women where we either chant, do women’s
yoga, children’s yoga, talk about parenting or just have “peanut
hour” and a shared lunch. Children can connect with each other in
this safe and uplifting energies and create a sense of sangat for
them. The idea is that we start a project with this toward a future
of children’s education and community center according to the
Dharma and inspired by the Teachings of Yogi Bhajan.
Guru /
Universal:
On the
universal level, we are also the home in Estonia for the Siri Guru
Granth Sahib ji, the Shabd Guru of the tradition of Sikh Dharma, and
we offer Gurdwara services and courses related to its technology and
spiritual teachings, such as Sikh Dharma introductory workshops, Naad
yoga and Gurbani Kirtan courses. The Shabad Guru is the thread that
helps us walk through the “darkness” of everyday lives and reach
the core of our beings.
Sukhdev
Kaur on the inspiration Dharamsaal has brought her:
As a woman
and a mother, I feel a strong need and wish for a spiritual community
beyond the teaching setting. My 3.5 year old son comes to baby yoga,
pregnancy and parenting classes with me and joins in his own way,
sometimes painting, sometimes running, sometimes chanting along. The
fact that he is around is very valuable for me and also for students.
The challenge is to communicate with him in an authentic manner, true
to the teachings on parenting, communication and relationships that I
teach others. For me, it is about opening up my personal life and
conscious relationship with my husband and family in Dharamsaal that
completes me as a teacher. I cannot pretend to be one in the yoga
class and other person at home. I have both challenges at once,
sometimes it is very intensive, yet also as elevating for me and for
him. By having him around I have grown wiser as a teacher and also in
respecting and valuing him as a person. It is not about imposing to
him an attitude of “good boy”, but about myself behaving
consciously and lovingly to him in any circumstance. This is
Humanology in its full bloom happening at Dharamsaal. Also Dharamsaal
has brought out the light in my husband, who does not practice
Kundalini Yoga but enjoys doing endless seva at the center by his own
initiative. The most important thing is that we have all put our
heart into the creation of this space for sharing.
Whenever
in Tallinn, plan to visit us either for a sadhana, staying overnight
in our humble guest room or joining an event. Sukhdev Kaur, family
and other teachers are happy to welcome you.
